Above Ground Pool Cleaning & Maintenance

Keep your above ground pools running at peak level

Installing an above ground swimming pool is a large investment. You'll want to make sure the Sharkline above ground pool is operating as designed by performing regular cleaning and maintenance. A dirty oval above ground pool can invite bacteria and algae to form on the water, and a poorly maintained pool can be a safety risk.

Maintenance is a must

The most important way to keep your rectangular above ground swimming pool clean is to keep the areas around it free from dirt, leaves, and other debris. That will eliminate chances of those items going into the above ground pool. Carefully remove the above ground pool cover to avoid dirt falling into the water.

If you have a deck around the pool, clean it occasionally with soapy water to keep dirt from entering the pool. Automatic pool cleaners do an OK job, but they're far from perfect. Regular vacuuming and brushing will keep the water clean. Always vacuum before brushing the sides.

Before you vacuum, check to make sure the above ground pool pump filter is clean. A dirty above ground pump filter will release debris back into your pool as you vacuum. Leaves, grass, and litter can get blown into your resin above ground pool, but those items can be removed with an above ground pool skimmer or leaf rake.

When you brush the aluminum above ground pool, use a brush recommended for the pool's type of liner. The brush should be stiff but not so stiff that it will rip rubber liners. Pay special attention to high-traffic areas like above ground pool ladders and creases in the above ground pool liner.

Make a summer checklist

It's a good idea to make a checklist before opening your pool for the summer. At the top of that list should be these items:

  • Check the condition of the above ground pool filter
  • Check the water chemistry
  • Check the pool's heater

Keep the above ground pool cover on the pool when not in use. Make sure the above ground pump is in good working order and that the above ground pool filters stay clean. The above ground pool skimmer basket should be regularly emptied.

Shocking your large above ground pool should be done once every two weeks. That will help rid the pool of harmful trihalomethane and chloramines. Above ground pool shocking kits are available at many pool dealerships.

Performing regular maintenance and cleaning will cut down on the time of manual cleaning. While day-to-day maintenance can be done by the owner, it's still a good idea to have an annual inspection and service performed by a professional.
