It's important to close the pool for the season
Winter is hard on anything that spends the season outdoors, and an above ground swimming pool is no exception. Properly shutting down above ground pools adds to the life of your pools. By following some simple guidelines, you'll be able to quickly get your oval above ground pool ready for the next season.
Start with a check of chemicals The first step for winterizing a rectangular above ground pool is to check the chemical balance. Properly balanced chemicals will prevent corrosion or scale buildup during the hibernation period. Suggested chemical levels are:
The outside temperature should be no higher than 60 degrees when you close down the above ground pool to prevent algae growth. Vacuum the above ground pool completely to remove all debris and sediment. Scrub the top rails of the pool to get all the dirt off. Drain the water to 6 inches below the bottom of the skimmer. Place a skimmer cover over the opening of the above ground pool skimmer to prevent water from entering and freezing. Next, disconnect all hoses and use a screw-on cover to cap the inlet. Take the cap of the filter off, drain any excess water, and allow the earth or sand to dry. Place a "pool pillow" in the middle of the above ground pool, and use nylon cord to tie it off to the sides. Don't use bleach jugs filled with water on the pool cover's eyelets; that will weaken the above ground pool cover and void your warranty. | ![]() |
Remove debris from the above ground pool filter
Dirt or sand that collects in the above ground pool filter should be removed using a shop vacuum. During the fall and winter seasons, it's a good idea to occasionally drain excess water from the winter above ground pool cover. You can also use a shop vacuum for that.
If you have a solar above ground pool cover, make sure it is completely dry for storage to avoid mildew formation. Any leftover chemicals should be stored in a warm place to prevent freezing. Finally, check all hoses and fittings for cracks and pinhole leaks. Rinse hoses inside and out before storing.
Now that you've completed these simple procedures, you can rest assured that you'll open your aluminum above ground pool for the next season with crystal clear water and have your pool up and running as soon as possible.
